Welcome to a new sewing class, in today’s class, I am going to teach you how to sew a lapped zip.
In previous classes we already learned to sew different types of zips, in today’s class, we are going to focus on the lapped zip.
So that you can practice today’s class, you will be able to download a small pattern where you can practice how to sew this zip.
You will find this pattern to download and print just below the video of today’s class.
For today’s class, we are going to use a 15cm (6 inch) zip but you can use the techniques you will learn today with any length of zip.
Like many sewing elements, we can sew this zip in different ways, today I show you my favourite way.
Today’s class starts by talking about the sample we are going to make today and printing the pattern.
Once we have the pattern prepared, we are going to pre-shrink the fabric and the zip to prevent it from shrinking later and creating problems.
Then we will sew the seam allowance leaving adequate space to add the zip.
Once this is done, we are going to sew the zipper to the fabric and give it a good final pressing.

It is important to remember that this class is real size, unlike most of my classes (recorded at half scale so you can see it better on camera)
The measurements that I am going to give you are common in the industry but remember that they may change depending on the country or the degree of quality that you want to give to the garment.
Remember that if you have any questions about today’s class, you can always send me an email through your student account, in the support section.

You already know that the best way to learn how to sew is by practising, so for today’s class I am going to ask you to sew the lapped zip.
Please use the pattern below the video and if possible use a 15 centimeter (6 inch) zip.
Send me photos of the final result and some photos of the intermediate steps.
Please try to make the photos as clear as possible so that I can send you better feedback.
