How to sew a dart like a pro

Welcome to a new sewing class, in today’s class I am going to teach you how to sew darts using different techniques.

Today’s class begins by downloading the files that you will find below the video of the class, you are going to print them and we are going to make some small modifications for the different techniques that we will carry out today.

When we have the 5 samples ready, we will pre-shrink the fabric and cut it.

The first exercise is classic darts, which emulate the darts that we would find on a skirt block, in this exercise we will learn 2 different ways to finish the dart

Then we will go to exercise number 2, where we will sew parallel darts, where we will put into practice how to empty a dart (we usually empty the darts when we work with very thick fabrics or with very big darts).

Class

We continue with exercise number 3 where we will learn to open a dart. This is a technique that we use especially when we sew jackets to make sure that the dart is very flat.

In this exercise we will also practice topstitching the dart. We can use this technique for different reasons, such as decoration, when we cannot press the dart, among others.

Then we will go to exercise number 4 where we will practice a curved dart, where we will learn how to sew it correctly.

To finish we will do exercise number 5 where we will learn to sew diamond-shaped darts, practising different finishes.
