How To Sew a Gather with ties – 3 Different Ways

Welcome to a new sewing class. In today’s class, I’m going to teach you how to sew a gather using the channel technique.

Gathering in a channel is a technique where we create a tunnel through which we pass a tie (strip) to help us control the gathering.

This channel can be created in different ways and with different finishes.

In today’s class, I’m going to teach you how to do 3 different ways to achieve this effect.

The first technique we will use is to make the ties come out from the hem of the garment and we will use the seam allowance to create the channel.

In this first technique, you will also see that we can create the channel in different ways.

For the second technique, we will again use the seam allowance to create the channel but instead of coming out through the hem, we will make an opening in the middle of the channel.

For the last technique, we will not use the seam allowance to create the channel but instead, we will make the channel using bias tape.

To carry out all these techniques you will find some patterns that you can download and print from your home.

Class

As you have seen in today’s class, we have sewn the ties in a classic way but this could be changed.

For a higher level garment, instead of using these ties, we could use a spaghetti strap.

Keep in mind that all of these measurements we have discussed today can be changed to your personal taste, but they have to make sense.

For example, if you make a 1cm channel, you will not create a 2cm tie because it will not fit in the channel.
