Welcome back to another Sewing Club class! In today’s lesson, we are going to sew a bucket hat with a bow in the back.
What’s interesting about this hat is that from the front, it looks like your regular, everyday bucket hat, but it features a beautiful bow in the back.
This bow is actually built into the brim—meaning it starts right at the side seam rather than being an added-on piece.
We will be making this hat using the patterns you can find right below the class video.
In these PDF patterns, you will find two different sizes; size number 1 is a hat designed to be fitted to the head of an adult woman.
Size number 2 is the same style of hat but designed to be larger, an oversized style.
In the Pattern Information section, you have the sizes with their measurements.

Today’s class begins by talking about patterns and what they are so you can understand them before you start sewing.
Once you understand them, we’ll pre-shrink the fabric and cut it using the pattern information.
We will begin sewing the crown, which we will do twice, since one of those times will clean the inside of the hat.
Next, we will sew the brim, both the front and the back.
On the back brim, which is larger than the crown, we will use that excess to create the bow.
It’s important to always make a prototype before sewing the final pattern to make sure you like how it looks and don’t want to change anything to suit your personal taste or measurements.
Another thing to keep in mind is that, depending on your final fabric, you may need to interlace the pieces or even use canvas for a stiff finish (if that’s what you’re looking for).
Remember that if you have any questions about today’s class, you can always send me an email through your student account, in the support section.
Show Me Your Work
You know that the best way to learn is by doing it yourself, so for today’s class I’m going to ask you to make a bucket hat with a bow.
This pattern isn’t very difficult, but you do need some experience, so keep that in mind before you decide to make it.
Please try to make sure the photos are clear and accurate so I can give you better feedback.
