Welcome to a new class of sewing alterations, in today’s class I am going to teach you how to shorten a sleeve on a jacket with decorative buttons.
Before starting this sewing alteration it is important that you check what types of buttons and buttonholes the sleeve has.
Decorative buttons are these buttons that have a buttonhole but it is not cut, in other words, the buttonhole does not work.
This is important because we have to unpick the buttonholes and if they are cut we cannot make this type of alteration.
If you have a jacket and want the sleeve to be shorter but they have functional buttonholes, you will need to shorten the sleeve at the top.
The class begins by writing out all the necessary measures to make this alteration in order to leave the sleeve exactly as it was.
Then we will begin to unpick the hem of the sleeve and we will discover how the sleeve looks inside since depending on the fabric we can apply different techniques.

Once we have seen the inside of the sleeve if we think it appropriate we will have to create the same finish.
To recreate the same finish we will have to use different techniques that we have already learned in other classes like how to do buttonholes and how to sew the hem.
As always, if you have any questions about today’s class, remember that you can send me an email through your account, in the support section.
Submit your exercises
You already know that the best way to learn is by practising, so I recommend buying a second-hand jacket or using a jacket that you want to throw away.
Practice with both sleeves until you don’t need to see the class and can do it with your eyes closed.
This sewing alteration is advanced, so if you’re just starting to sew start by doing others exercises before.
Please send me photos where you can clearly see the before and after, also attach photos where I can see your process.
