How to put a zip on a hoodie

Welcome to a new sewing alterations class. In today’s class, I’m going to teach you how to put a zip on a hoodie.

This means that we will take a hoodie that is put on over the head and we will put a zip in the centre front as an opening system.

This transformation is very easy to give a hoodie a second chance or as in my case, I don’t like to put a hoodie on over my head and I prefer the zip.

Today’s class begins by marking the middle of the hoodie, where we will also have to mark the seam allowance for the zip and then we will cut it.

Next, we will adjust the hood, since the neckline of the hoodie will be smaller than the hood.

This can be done in several ways, in this case, we will create some darts since the hood has metal eyelets.

To finish today’s class, we will sew the zip, making sure that a non-elastic zip looks good on an elastic fabric.

Please note that the length of the dart changes depending on the width of your final dart.

To put this into perspective, I was working in an atelier in a wealthy part of London.

For this type of work, I used to charge between 55 and 75 pounds.
