How to make a sleeve with an elbow dart

Welcome to a new pattern making class. In today’s class, I’m going to teach you how to make a sleeve with an elbow dart.

In today’s class, I will teach you two ways to make this sleeve; the first way is tighter than the second.

For both versions, we will use the sleeve block that you learned in previous classes.

Adding an elbow dart to a sleeve block transforms the sleeve to make it more ergonomic to the body.

Because if you look at the human body, our arm is not straight down, but rather it pulls forward from the elbow.

Today’s class begins with the first version, where we will make a tighter sleeve.

For this version, we will add a dart at the bottom, where we will then move it wherever we want.

This dart is very common in bridal sleeves, where we put the buttons to hide it.

It’s also quite common in jackets where we put a zip.

The second version, I personally use it less, but it is usually taught in universities, so I’m going to show it to you too.

Class

As you saw in today’s class, the length of the dart can be changed to personal preference, but here we have to take into account the fabric we are going to use.

There are fabrics that allow for shorter darts and don’t leave them too pointy.

We need to take into account the relationship between the width of the dart and the length.

If we want the dart to be wider to have a greater inclination, we may have to make the dart longer.
