How to make a ruched skirt

Welcome to a new pattern making class. In today’s class, I’m going to teach you how to make a ruched skirt.

This skirt is classic and usually has an opening on one side of the front and is usually located where one of the darts is.

This opening is gathered at the top of the skirt thanks to a channel where we will put some ties that will help us control the gathering.

Today’s class begins by tracing the patterns of the skirt block, here we could change to the desired length.

Before transforming these patterns I personally like to make the facing as it will be much easier to do now.

For the back, we are going to make a very simple pattern since I want us to focus on the front.

We will return to the front where we will unfold the pattern, as this opening creates an asymmetrical skirt – it is not the same on both sides.

We will separate the patterns of the front and the front side where we will add volume to be able to gather it.

We will also make the ties (or strip) pattern that will help us control this gathering.

As always, I will give you all the necessary measurements to create this design but remember that you can change it to your personal taste.

You already know that depending on your final fabric, the volume you have to give to this garment has to change.

Thicker fabrics require less volume than thinner fabrics.
