How to make a Polo collar

Welcome to a new pattern-making class. In today’s class, I’m going to teach you how to make a Polo collar.

The polo collar is characterized by having two distinctive elements, an opening system that in this case will be a short placket although we could also add a zip.

The other element that characterizes the polo collar is the pointed collar, although this can obviously be changed.

For this design I decided to make a very exaggerated pointed collar to make it more striking, but obviously you can make it more modest.

Today’s class begins with the pattern for the front basic bodices, where we will first add ease to make a semi-loose body.

Next we will widen the neckline to make the collar more comfortable to wear.

Then we make the pattern to create the placket, as I explain in today’s class you can choose how many buttons you want to add, in our case we will add 3.

Next, we’ll move on to making the collar, where we make a pointy collar, but first, I recommend you watch the Peter Pan collar class.

Finally, we industrialize all the patterns so you’re ready to make your first prototype.

Remember to walk all the patterns to make sure everything works perfectly before cutting it into fabric.

These patterns can be sewn in different ways, the way I have chosen is to put the neck seam inside the collar itself.

That said, brands today often add bias tape to the neckline because it’s much faster to sew.

I’ve seen this even in luxury brands.
