Welcome to a new pattern making class, in today’s class, I am going to teach you how to make a dress with an elastic waistband.
This type of dress can be made in different ways. For today’s class, we are going to create a channel where we will put the elastic band.
Today’s class begins by transforming the pattern blocks of the body up to the hips where we will transform the darts and add volume to create this effect.
The first thing I like to do when making a dress is change the length of the pattern to the desired length.
I have made a fairly short dress but you can lengthen it to personal taste.
Then I changed the neckline to a “V” shaped neckline to make it a slightly more attractive design.
Next, we are going to transform the darts to create more volume and we are also going to add extra volume to create this effect.
This design does not have sleeves, so we have to remove the ease in the armhole, I recommend that you watch the corrective darts class first.

As you have seen in today’s class, I am going to clean the openings with a bias tape but you can do an all-in-one facing if it is easier for you.
As always, I will give you all the necessary measurements to make the same design that I made, but you can change it to your personal taste.
Depending on the opening of the neckline and also depending on the ease you want to give to this pattern, you may not need a zip but you can check it in your first prototype.
Remember that if you have any questions about today’s class, you can always send me an email through your student account, in the support section.
Send your exercises
You already know that the best way to learn industrial pattern making is by practicing, so for today’s class I am going to ask you to make the same patterns that I have made.
You can make these patterns real size or half scale.
Please try to send me photos where the patterns and their annotations are clearly and accurately seen so that I can send you better feedback.
